CHS Booster Club/Cheshire Herald Athletes of the Week

Congrats to Cheshire High School Booster Club/The Cheshire Herald Athlete(s) of the Week: senior Andrew Yamin and junior Nate Hillburn (football), senior Lindsay Smalec and freshman Liz Boyer (girls’ swimming and dive), seniors Hannah Bonitz and Hannah Perez (girls’ soccer), senior Maggie O’Reilly (field hockey), and junior Marli Green (girls’ volleyball)!

(Football) Yamin ran for a game-high 214 yards (touchdowns of 25 and 3 yards) behind the senior offensive line of Cullen Clairmont, Connor Fountain, Ray Albanese, Matt Rand, and Will Eddy.  Hillburn made two of the team’s four interceptions. Yamin and classmate Matt Covel added one each in Cheshire’s victory over Ridgefield.

(Girls’ Swim and Dive) At West Haven, Smalec won the 100-yard butterfly and factored into another victory for her 200-yard medley relay squad. Boyer collected her first victories in the 200-yard individual medley and 400-yard freestyle relay. In the home opener, Boyer and Smalec captured four events. It was a career-high for Boyer, who took first place individually in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. She and Smalec helped to win the 200-yard medley and Boyer’s relay team also won the 200-yard freestyle relay.  Smalec added wins in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard backstroke and 400-yard freestyle relay.

(Girls’ Soccer) Perez on Tuesday scored twice in Cheshire’s comeback victory over Sacred Heart Academy. Bonitz contributed two goals and an assist in the first half of Friday’s 5-1 victory over Branford.

(Field Hockey) O’Reilly anchored the defensive unit that shut out Guilford and didn’t allow a shot (19-0) on goal in Cheshire’s 3-0. She also scored her first high school goal on a penalty corner.

(Girls’ Volleyball) Green had a team-best kill total in the first two In the opener, Green had nine kills. She returned on Friday to set personal-highs for kills (11) and blocks (four).
