Congrats to The Cheshire Herald/Cheshire High School Booster Club Athletes of the Week for Feb. 8-17: senior tri-captains Missy Bailey (girls' basketball), Liam Nicoll (boys' indoor track and field), Selina Sampieri (girls' indoor track and field), and junior co-captain Liz Cunningham (girls' skiing)!
With 15 points on Feb. 14, Bailey cracked the 1,000-point plateau (1,011 overall) in a 51-47 win over Sheehan. The four-year starting point guard joined fellow tri-captains Lily Dolyak and Bryanna McIntosh as Senior Night honorees. The Lady Rams (11-10) are awaiting seeding for next month's Class LL Tournament.
Nicoll placed second in the Class LL 300-meters (36.02) on Feb. 8, breaking the school record (36.22, 2003) of 2005 graduate Kyle Mushaweh.
He returned to Hillhouse's Floyd Little Athletic Center for Monday's State Open where he placed sixth overall (36.08). For the first time, Nicoll has qualified for the New England Interscholastic Championship on March 1 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury, Mass. He will also compete in the New Balance National Championship on March 14 in New York City.
In pole vault, Sampieri cleared 10 feet to finish top five at Class LL (third) and State Open (tie for fourth). She finished her indoor career as the school's record-holder.
On Feb. 12, Cunningham won her first Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League race (47.06) at Mount Southington. CHS girls (300.88) swept Amity (330.89) and Glastonbury (314.91), along with Branford, Westbrook, and Westhill by disqualification, to improve to 9-5.
Cunningham has also made Team Connecticut for the second straight season. The squad visits Attitash Mountain Resort (N.H.) for the Eastern High School Championship from March 7-9.
